Default Cigarette Lighter for '07 Mustang?

I can't believe I've spent so much time looking for this...

I need a cigarette lighter that will work in our '07 Mustang. It's not for me, please no lectures on smoking.

I checked Motorcraft, and tried two different aftermarket brands, no luck.

Ford made some kind of change to the lighter socket in '05, lighters for models through '04 don't work. And so far I haven't found one for '05-up in any of the aftermarket catalogs.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Mike

Did you try a Ford dealership?

Yes. My dealer said "It's a 12V power recepticle, not a cigarette lighter. Thank you for calling."

I did a Google search and found this on another Mustang forum;

"I've just had a cigarette lighter installed and you're exactly right, the lighter itself is too small for the "power" outlet socket. What my dealer did was to order the lighter and the sleeve which replaces stock sleeve in your dash, turning the power outlet into a cigarette lighter. The dealer will need to install, because you need to open the dash to place the sleeve from behind. This might take some time, especially if the mechanic hasn't worked on an 05 before. Mine took almost three hours, but the service manager only charged me for one hour of work - said it was a learning experience for his mechanic. Get your guy to give you a price before he installs it. If they have any questions, tell them to contact Burt Weinman Ford in Chicago."

Thanks for the link. The item description for 04810 says, "Both the ash cup and lighter mount to the center console."

How does this work? I'd like to use the dash socket, and there is no power source in either of the cups in the center console.

Thanks for that info. It's looking like the correct answer so far.

For 3 hours of labor, I'll tell my other half to use a damd BIC.

The difference between the OEM 'power outlet' and a cigarette lighter outlet is the
bi-metallic spring at the bottom of the lighter socket that releases the lighter when it
gets hot. The OEM 'power outlet' does not have this spring (go look for yourself)
and is not designed for high temperatures like the lighter socket is. You can install
it yourself and www.mossmotors.com sells them.
Add an ash cup and lighter to your Mustang.
The ash cup/coin holder is designed to fit in all
cup holders and includes a lid to keep ashes or
spare change in place. It’s constructed of a durable
thermoplastic and removes easily for cleaning.

$64.00

Thanks very much. Do you know if this socket replaces the existing one in the dash, or just slips inside of it?

EDIT: Never mind that question. I called Mossmotors. It's a replacement.

EDIT#2: Never mind this topic. Owner's Manual, page 50: it says to not use the console powerpoint for a cigarette lighter, right before it says a Smoker's Package is available -- which uses the console powerpoint for its cigarette lighter.

Whatever. Looks like the console storage bin is the only option, short of tearing my dashboard apart.

Thanks all!
