The 7.5" just can't handle the abuse that the 8.8" can. My car isn't a powerhouse by any means, but if/when I do start adding more power, it's good to know the 8.8" won't break on me after a couple of hard launches.
Also, it's cheaper in the long run to just buy an 8.8" than it would be to build a 7.5", break it, then build it up again.
