Default Coolant Temp gauge

Is it an idiot light rather than an actual gauge?

It seems to be a regular gauge, slowly raises until engine is up to temp and then stays planted in the middle, but I had the torque app hooked up to an OBD2 dongle the other day and the temp on that went from 100C (212F) up to 120c (248), then back down to 100c once the fan kicked in. The gauge on the dashboard stayed right in the middle though.

Or is Torque App being dumb?

I believe the temp gauge is a go-no-go gauge. I may be mistaken.
