Default Differences between Automatic shifter part numbers

I'm in the process of ordering a shifter assembly for my 2007 Mustang ragtop, because the interlock solenoid has gone south. According to the Ford shop manual, the solenoid is not a replaceable part, and the entire unit must be replaced. However...
A search on several OEM parts websites has turned up two models - Ford part # 8R3Z7210-C, and 8R3Z7210-D. The 'C' version is over twice the price of the 'D' model. Anyone know what the mechanical differences are?
All the websites have a VIN number qualifier to determine compatibility, but only one emailed me to state that the 'D' version wasn't compatible with the VIN.
Here is their message:
"Tom, The part you ordered, 8R3Z-7210-D, is not per VIN. It does call for the 8R3Z-7210-C, BUT...both parts are on an indefinite back order thru Ford. The order has been cancelled because we have no release date so we won't hold your money indefinitely. We apologize for any inconvenience."

The problem right now is moot, as all the parts sites have reported that the units are back ordered, with no date of availability.
I have found a new 'C' version on eBay, but I'll hold off on ordering until someone on this forum can tell me "At this point, what difference does it make?"
Thanks vermilion.

My guess it's appearance, The satin chrome and the other is black. Function is the same.

Seems like it. 'D' is the most current for just black.

Where are you trying to order from?
Might just have to go with Ebay since they can't list it unless they have it.

Excellent seller rating so it'd be a pretty safe bet IMO.

Thanks for the informative reply, Derf. FordPartsGiant was one of the vendors I originally tried to order from, but like the others, got an email that they were back ordered. As artsvettes73 had posted, it seems that the only difference between the two models is appearance (Interior Sport Appearance Package vs. Base Interior Decor). What was aggravating was the fact that one was over twice the price of the other, and that expensive one had the chrome trim that peeled off the grip and cut the palm of your hand.

Nice eBay find, too. The one I was looking at was twice the price of the flmparts1 vendor, so I'm going with that one.
Again, mucho thanks.
Tom
