I think it would depend on which setup you went with. An o/r x-pipe or even an x-pipe with high flow cats will net you more rwhp with a stock cat-back over the stock h-pipe, because the stock h-pipe has four cats on it. If you changed just your cat-back and went with a chambered setup like Flowmaster you would be lucky to gain anything at all aside from sound. A straight through system like Bassani, Magnaflow or Borla will get your more anyday. With that said I would lean towards the mid-pipe giving more power for what you are trying to do.

Well stated! I still havent gotten my cat-back but have installed my o/r X. Didn't do anything but make it sound good.

Upgrading just the midpipe will get you some nice sound but dont expect a noticeable difference in hp. An aftermarket midpipe is 2.5" in diameter which allows for better exhaust flow. A stock midpipe and catback is 1.25", so having a midpipe and is 2.5" and then going into a catback that is 1.25" isnt really going to do a whole lot. You will probably gain (as mafia stated) 5-8 rwhp and maybe 10 rwhp from a new midpipe and catback together.

Since it is a straight through system 'yes' you get something from it; though not as much as you can get out of it. Change the mid-pipe and headers...then she'll breathe better like you wouldn't believe
