Default Tire Talk

Ok. I have been trying to understand how the tire sizes work. I have been arguing with a guy at work about this. What number goes with what part of the tire.. as in let's say a 245-45-17..?

Thanks,

Raymond

245 i think it the width or something to do with the width. 35 or 40 is the side wall i think. and 17 is the size diamater.

That is what I though. I keep getting told I am wrong. I knew the 17 was the diamete of the wheel opening.. but the other two i was unsure about.
