Default Rear end locked up??

first of all hello to all mustang owners...im posting this for a buddy as im trying to help him out...he owns a pretty stock 96 gt...heres what happen...yesterday he was having a problem getting in second...it wouldnt wanna grab the gear...he didnt think much of it cuz it happened just 2 on a short drive and then stoped....well he went to trow second again in a lil spirited driving and boom no second no 3rd or any other gear...just first...the car wont go into any gear and shifter feels like nothings there...also when this happen we tried to drive the car into a gas station but before we made it in the rear end locked up...so no gears and now rear end is locked...also the car has a squeaking sound around the rear while its running...the car was towed home and still stands as is...i believe the problem to be the tranny but i just wanna be sure before we start dropping it...i wouldnt see what else it could be especially since its locked up and all...i just wanted some input from people who know these cars way better then me so i can help out my buddy...thanks for all your help ahead of time guys

if you had 1st but no 2nd or 3rd sounds like you blew the trans out.

he's gonna need the rear end rebuilt and the trans rebuilt/replaced. i'd say just get a newer stang unless it's ingood shape otherwise
