Default CAI vs. K&N + removing Air Silencer on stock setup

'04 GT

Whats the real difference between doing a CAI like a K&N FIPK II and just putting a K&N cone and removing the air screen?

Besides about $200

The looks are the difrances in doing that. You can do what i did take off the silencer and the intake all the way off and take a bowl and stick it on the top of the cone piece and draw a line oround it then cut on the line with a dremel and now it is as good as an after market one. (but much cheaper)

For the life of me I can't find my air silencer. I did by the car used, but it was completely stock and I don't think the owner would've taken it off.

There's nothing attached inside the fender that I can see. (1998 GT)

Thats actually not the case. The intake tube on an aftermarket CAI is smooth unlike the ribbed like the stock one, providing a better air flow to the TB. If you're going to bother with the CAI, K&N isn't necessarly the best route. That system still sucks hot air from under the hood. The fenderwell intake is a better bet with the filter inside the fender getting cooler air from outside of the car. Both aren't really worth it, but every horse helps.
