1) Check the wires
2) Check the gap (I don't think the stock gap setting will work with FI
3) Check the coil(s). I assume if you're running wires, then it's not COP. Are the coils 'hot' enough?
That's all I can think of that makes any kind of sense.

Sheet metal just describes the physical stock of metal it came from..
I've seen SMIM that were almost 1/2in. thick at the runner walls, and up to almost 3/4in at the flanges...
It's not like little Jimmy Welder decided to take his dad's tool box, hack it up, and make it work...

Also, I guess something useful,
When was the last time the truck was Tuned properly?? If it's only in that RPM range, and his plugs are okay, it could very well be an overly "rich," tune...
