Default cd player trouble(overheating)

i have an 02' GT. i was driving up to virginia tech for my orientation and i noticed that my dashboard and cd player that whole are was extremely hot. it actually hurt to touch it. when we arrived at the campus i tried to change eject a CD and it just never came out. it read CD error. The next morning after a lot of time to cool off when is tarted the car the cd came out like nothing was wrong. Has this ever happened to anyone else? and do you think its a major problem?
