RE: clutch chatter
Clutch chatter is usually caused by bad pressure plate fingers or springs, or contaminants on the disc/flywheel. Have you adjusted your clutch recently? With the car in nuetral, push the clutch to the floor, let it come up then put your foot under the pedal and pull it towards you. Do this a couple of times.
A rear Main leak will not usually get oil on the surfaces unless it's squirting out which again, is not typical.

an inch of play on a 99?? mmm...that's probably your problem there. The 99-00 have a weird clutch. At least in stock form they do. They do not require you to press the clutch pedal all the way to the floor to disengage. More like half-way. If you have an inch of free play I would adjust that out first then see how the clutch responds.
