why do we call it modular?

RE: why do we call it modular?
it was a nickname ford came up with for the new motors, because the parts were interchangeable.
this was taken from a the new SHM book:
Ford nicknamed its series of 4.6- and 5.4-liter SOHC and DOHC engines “modular” because, from the beginning, it had hoped for a great deal of parts interchangeability, building upon the basic engine design and expanding the entire family of engines (e.g., the 16-valve head from a 4.6 ’92 Crown Victoria will bolt right up to the aluminum block of the 5.4 DOHC Cobra R).

dats right doc - its all about interchangability - of course their's more than just 4.6 and 5.4 in the modular family as well. Pretty much pertains to their whole new attitude to keep things simple and costs down.
