Default BRAKE HELP PLEASE--URGENT

my rear brake on the drivers side has a major problem. how do i compress the caliper, i tried using a c-clamp, but that didn't work, and i finally got the caliper on with my old pads and rotor, but when i took it for a test drive they were rubbing because i just went around the block and smoke was billowing from the rear wheel, and i took it back apart after it cooled down, and one of the pads was wore on an angle, so that tells me that the pad was in crooked, but other than that nothing was wrong. what could the problem be????? this is my daily driver, and i need it to go to college for cross country practice tomorrow

I'm not sure about 99's... but on my 98 the rear brake caliper has to be pressed in with a special tool. It wouldn't surprise me if yours was the same. To compress the caliper you have to use a tool to rotate the calipers inward. You can borrow the tool from most auto parts stores....

If you have a set of heavy needle nose pliers you can do it with them, good luck.

Just hope you didn't damage the threads on the sides of the caliper piston.. If you did, this alone could seize that one wheel..

Also, how long did you drive your car like that?? If you had driven for a while, and really heated those brakes up, you may need to resurface the rotor and/or rough up the pad a little...

It is easier to get them in if you crack the bleeder loose too.I got a tool at napa for under 10bucks if it is really stuck last resort have a bud hold the caliper and crank on it with some good channel locks.I have done a few taurus rear brakes.Gm rears are much cooler they have a small drum brake inside the disc for the e brake. good luck................Gary99gt

Its much easier to crank the piston in if you leave one of the locating pins in place, swing the caliper up, and have someone hold it for you (so that you don't damage the metal portion of the brake line). That way you've got both hands free to get some force on the caliper. I'd be careful doing it in ways other than with the right tool. All you have to do is put down a deposit at an auto parts store to get one... so its basically free. No point in risking damage to your caliper.
