Default Tuner questions

can anyone tell me how the tuners on these cars work? i know there are tuners for diesels that actually take the high performance program off the tuner and implant it in the trucks computer so it can only be used on one truck at a time, smart, but i also know you can buy tuners that just give you access to your computer and let you change your computers options. which kind is the Diablo Tuner?

Ok lets see where do i start.

So tuners remap the fuel and timing strategy to make more power.

Diesels are VERRY underpowered from the factory for three reasons: Cooling, emissions, and gas mileage.
The reason you can get so much out of deisels is becuase they are soooo far detuned from the factory. The mustang, being a sports car, doesnt really have that problem. There is power to be found in stangs by tuning but not much on a stock application. I used to work at a ford shop where we did a lot of powerstrokes and soooo many ppl JUST put on tuners and nothing else and they melt the engines down. This is my advice to diesel owners: do not put on a tuner unless you have an air intake, exhaust, and upgraded intercooler. Those engines run REALLY hot. Deisel burns at twice the btu content of gasoline. The stock intake, intercooler, exhaust cant hold that kind of heat. It gets too hot and causes serious damage to the engine. Sure you can get tuners for deisels that unlock 200 hp and 300 trq but its not good on your engine unless youve taken the proper steps. Shoot i drove this 6.0 powerstroke once that had an upgraded intercooler and turbo housing, exhaust, intake, methonal & propaine injection, and bully dog 6-gun touch screen tuner not to mention a whoolle lot more of little things but we took that out and a 99 vette from the lot and turned the tune up to max turned on the meth and LP and me and this dude i worked with went from a 40 roll and i romped it and just tore the rear wheels up and couldnt hook up worth anything. We did it from a 60 roll and i pulled about 2 car lengths on him. The trq on this truck (from doing emissions dyno) was rated at 870 at the rear wheels. These deisels are beasts! I was talking to the guy at the truck dyno and he said that some of these dudes make 1000 trq at the wheels with propaine and nitrous injection kits! Crazy stuff.

Yeah to answer your question the tuner takes the computer strategy off you ECU and loads a new one. The tuner stores its old one in it memory banks.
