Ok ... don't listen to that mess of crap ...

I have had 3.55 and 4.10 .. and of course stock 3.23 and I have driven about every type of car with about everytype of gear ratio ...

I know for a fact .. 3.55 at 80 mph is 2450-2500 rpms .. and at 70 mph about 2250-2300

I also know for a fact .. at 70 mph 4.10 are running 2500 rpms ...

Listen to people who have the gears and drive them .. not to the number game !!!
well i gave him that info to do what he needed himself...now if u want to dispute it...first off its 3.27's stock, second of all what tranmission you running, what gear and what size wheels with what size tires? those rpms hold nothing until you know what type of combination they are coming from and if that has anythign to do with what GT 281 has.

Now if he has to listen to people who know gears, my friend has a GT with 3.73's and i own a cobra with 4.10's, and i must say myself that if i had the choice i would drop my gears .2 atleast to 3.90 or even 3.73 because its better to have traction than slip the clutch or just spin tires...and ppl will tell you its not just picking gears, its picking gears to match your car
You own a cobra .. and run 4.10 .. I'd have nothing short of a 4.30-4.56 in a cobra .. but then again .. I see what you mean .. those are gears for people who know how to drive ; )

By the way .. unless you do a drastic tire/rim swap .. its not going to affect gearing that much .. going from 17's -18's only lowered my rpms by maybe 100 ..

Ok .. using that calculater he posted in that link .. this it was it says ..

Your tire's (295/35/18) diameter is 26.130 inches
At 70 MPH in 5th gear, your motor is turning at 2,289.0 RPM
I'd say that might be a conservative estimate.. but def. one of the closest calcs I've seen .. props to whoever found that !!!

But it does prove that the gears aren't as drastic as people want to think ....

oh yeah...4.56's are wonderful for a large amount of highway driving...why dont we just go with 6.17 and top out at 130 mph but atleast ill get there real fast and know i didnt wuss out on gears!!!...and apparently you've never driven a cobra because wheel hop is a factor, and im sure multiplying torque by 4.3 or 4.56 is just gonna help it tons...as stated MULTIPLE times above...its about what you want on the car, not just what you can go with

How does this apply to a 2003 stock with an auto?

What model number is the automatic tranny and what ratio are the stock gears?

I'm doing about 1500rpm or so at 55/60mph which seems kind of high to me?

So I guess my question is, what would changing gears do for me with an automatic?

This is a DD and I do a lot of highway driving.
I'm not really interested in straight line racing, but a little kick in the seat would be nice
What negative, if any, effect will a gear change have?

tia..

steve...most ppl would say 4.10's for an automatic because of the overdrive ratio...but if your not looking for anything extreme...3.90's would be just as good with a little better fuel economy...and yes, fuel economy loss is really the only bad thing about gears...ive heard there is slightly higher wear on some parts...but its nothing to be deathly concerned about

Look its not my fault the IRS sucks donkey ***** for straight line racing .. thats why most people I know swap that out... I'm sayin .. IF I HAD A COBRA .. I'd run 4.30 more than likely .. 4.56 if it was my second car ...
