the RIGHT way to do it is, relieve the fuel PRESSURE from the system. Don't be a hero and just use a disconnect tool and pull the line. Go ahead get fuel all over you, in you skin, in your eyes, etc.. Do it the right way, Just open the hood, grab a couple of thick towels/rags and push the schrader valve in to relieve the pressure the RIGHT way/ Sure you'll still have fuel come out at the filter, but do it right to avoid fuel in the face. Don't half *** it, safety first.

No, although I'd drain the system since it just takes a second (although I don't see how killing the pump and starting it is a wrong way compared to doing it by the schrader valve), redass is definitely correct in saying that you don't NEED to. The way he does it is no different then what you do, you open up a hole in the system and the pressure is released, he's just doing it all at the same time. If you have a rag in your hand when you pull the hose off you aren't going to squirt fuel everywhere. His method will only shoot it out faster because it's pressurized, but again, if you have a rag, you're gonna catch it all anyway so it makes no difference.

It's up to you how you do it, but there is not right or wrong way about it.

Do the early 4.6 sn's have schrader valves?

right who cares, first off I'm not your buddy, that's great you've done it that way and it worked for you and yes I have changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel injectors, etc.. etc.. before. We all have different ways. I'm just suggesting a safer way than just start pulling off fuel lines. If it works that way, great. I prefer to go the other route, just to make sure, fuel isn't something to play with. Thank you, thank you very much, now I need to get me some dinner. And WTF you talking about speculate? There is no speculation. Ok anywho, carry on citizens. Got better things to do that argue with someone over a fuel filter.

I didnt read all the posts, but what I did when I changed mine to relieve the pressure was start my car and unplug the connection to the fuel pump that is accessible at the rear of the car in-between the bumper and gas tank, and let the gas run out of the line. Worked great for me as no gas spilled on me when I changed it. Be sure you don't break the plastic clips also.
