Default Fuel Pump issues

I was driving to work one day and as I was cruising my car just died while im doing 70mph. So I pull over to the side, and try to start her up again. She cranks, but doesnt fire up. There is gas in the car, but she doesnt want to fire up. Also, my check engine light was flashing prior to when I stalled out. When my light first came on I went to autozone and iwas throwing the "misfire code from cylinder 1".I replaced the plug and coil pack with no luck. So i tow it to the Ford Dealership and they call mea few hours later explaining to me that there is a problem with my engine loom. Basically, there was a fuse that was grounding out my fuel pump and fuel pump was not working properly. So, this is going to cost me $550 bucks to have this fixed. Does this problem sound like whats causing my car to run like crap and idle rough and have unburned fuel coming out of my exhaust?? I dont want to spend $550 bucks for them to fix it and then start it up and she doesnt run good? Currently, the pony is sitting in the driveway waititng for me to get my xmas money. has this happened to you guys before? If they fix this fuel pump will my pon ybe back to normal....or is there another deeper problem? Sorry for the long post, Im just a noob with questions that wants to learn.

Have a buddy turn the ign key to the on postion while you listen out back for the fuel pump. 2 of my friends had the same problem. One was broke so I rewired the positive wire for the fuel pump to a fuse that cuts off when the engine is off and he has been driving fine since. The other guy took his car to the stealership and they told him the same thing they told you.. He was getting cams installed the next day so he talk to the performance shop and they fixed it for free. I don't remember what the problem but I do remember that it was nowhere near what the dealership said. Ill try to get ahold of him and find out what the problem was.

I don't get it. OxfordGT just gave you an idea? Some thing I'd mention see if you hear the pump or not while turning the iginition to the on position. I wouldn't pay $550.00. It's all labor BS.

can you not replace the pump yourself? I think my friend paid 150-200 in labor to get one installed a few months ago

When it comes to intricate stuff like that....I really dont have that much experience.

Do I get a new fuel pump from Ford, Pepboys, or someplace online and how much do they run. All I have are the basic house tools. If you guys can point mein the right direction, then I can see if I can do it. Thanks guys!!
