Default New to Mustang world 4.6L Part 2 (gears)

WOW!!! So much information, but the good news is I have alot of time, the bad news is $$ bills y'all...lol. So for now I'll have to take car of the daily maintenance e.g. oil changes, tune-ups, wear & tear, car washing, etc...I will have to change my 1st modding project to the changing of the gear ratio. The supercharger, unfortunetly, will have to wait.

After reading everybodies repliesI did a little google investagation. One thing (Most likely there are more I'm wrong about) I was wrong about is my gear ratio. I am very sad to announce that my car, the2004 Mustang GT stock, automatic has 2.49:1 final drive ratio [:@]!! The Mach1 (same year) automatic is the same ratio as the GT & the V6 ( same year) automatic is 2.29:1.

On the Manual Trans the gear ratiofor 2004 GT/Mach1 is 3.55:1 & the V6 is 3.27:1

Here is the breakdown for the automatic gear ratios:1st - 2.84:12nd - 1.55:13rd - 1.00:14th - 0.70:1http://media.ford.com/products/press...amp;make_id=92The above link is where I found out all this information. So that leaves me to believe that before I startthe supercharging MODI will need to upgrade my gear ratio. 4.10 gear ratio sounds good to me as somebody mentioned earlier, I believeMVR mentioned it and 03fireredstang also mentioned I won't be so slow off the line.So my next question is.How do I start this upgrade to my gears? What do I need to do? Please help. I want to thank everyone again for the last post on the supercharger. This web-site really is helpful

Are you planing on putting the gears in yourself, or getting them put in by a mechanic after you buy them ?

no offense to the OP but if hes askin those question he should definately get them installed by a pro. that is no knock on him, i wouldnt want to do my gears.

your gonna need a beareing kit, gears, gear oil, gasket and anywhere from 300-450 for labor

Yep, with all do respect, weasels right, you could do it, but if you don't know what your doing you should hire someone who does so you don't risk screwing up your car, that is why i brought up the question of the mechanic, i'd hate to see you lose such a nice ride, plus it's not that much to have something like that installed

think about it $350-$400 to get it installed as opposed to $1600 or so,to get a whole new rear end if it gets screwed up by not being installed right

Actually I think the Manual gear ratio for the 99-04 GT is also 3.27. I know the 03-04 Cobras had 3.55. I'm not sure about the Mach, but I'm pretty sure the GT's stock ratio is also 3.27.

I will definetly get a mechanic to do it. The only way I would do it if I had my own shop and lift..lol...

What do you think ofthis price from American Muscle (hopefully I picked the right one):http://www.americanmuscle.com/motive...gears-410.html

Which kit should I get with it? I believe I only have one option, I couldn't click on them both.

Handyandy I only quoted what I got off that web-site, there is a difference in ratio between the manual and automatic. Did you click on the link?

From what the chart said there is no difference in gear ratio (stock) on both the Mach1 & GT. On the manual, both of them have a ratio of 3.55:1 . On the automatic both of them have a ratio of 2.49:1. That's what the chart says.

Tomorrow morning I am going outside to make sure. I will lift the car up and spin the tire and see how many turns thedrive shaftmakes. Do I spin the tire once or twice ?

Goodnight all!!

To be continued...
