Default E-Brake went out...Help!

I was applying my e-brake the other day and it sounded like the cable snapped. When I first purchased the vehicle the e-brake didn't grab very well so I'm suspecting that both rears went out. Any way to fix this or anything to look for before taking it to the mechanic? I've never had a problem with an e-brake on a car, and I've owned a lot older and more abused cars than my 98GT.

Thanks,
Thomas.

More abused than a frozen Mustang? Anyway, just do the idiot check and follow your e-brake lines and look for anything obviously wrong. If that fails.... suck it up and take it to Ford to be fixed.

There isn't much you can do. My cable snapped and I had to get it fixed a few months ago. I went to a local shop where I have a friend, so it wasn't too expensive.

you still have an ebrake.

Just put it up on jackstands and take a look. They arent hard to change out maybe an hour or two of time. Haynes manual was very helpful. You have to take the center console out but thats not too bad. Taking them out is definitely alot harder then putting them in.
