Default torque converter selection

Im looking to get a new torque converter because my stock one seems to be giving me some trouble. I have a 96 GT with nothing but exhaust done to it. I was wondering what would be the best torque converter to buy. I dont need anything overly high performance apparently, but I wouldlike something with a little highter stall, say 2800 or something like that. I dont really want to spend a whole lot on it, something around 2 or 3 hundred would benice.I would appreciate any suggestions.

the higher stall will hurt you unless youre making some serious mid-high end power. what kind of trouble is your TC giving you

youre not getting a good tq convertor for 2-300 dollars, you need to search ebay for that not question here what people would suggest. im sure theres only a few shatty tq converters to be found for that price. look up faqs about stalls on a converter. you would need to speak with a specialist to get a true answer as to what it would take to get your current setup to 2800 stall, as with more horsepower comes more stall.

Stall speed refers to the torque converters theoretical fluid lock up point, basically the point at which the engine doesn't have any more torque available to shear the fluid. Installing a converter with a higher stall speed allows the engine to get farther up in its power band, so when you leave the line the engine will be doing a higher RPM and theoretically getting you to the power band quicker, as lower gears do. Traditionally high stall converters were needed for high RPM engines because at the normal 1200 RPM or so these engines didn't have anything on the bottom end. Let alone if you've got one that wants to idle at 2000 RPM and the converter will not let it get past 1000 it is tugging at the line with the brakes pinned to the floor hence why vehicles with a sh*tload of power always have a stall of 2500, 3000 and sometimes more.

Well I originally thought I was having tranny problems, but Im thinking it is probably the torque converter after looking around on the internet for people with the same problem. When im going along at a constant speed, usually lower rpms ( 1500 2000ish) the motor will speed up a couple hundred rpms for a second almost like its shifting down then back up, just not so extreme. Also, once in a while when it shifts theres a bit of a chatter. This worries me. And forget the stall then, im not really to worried about that. I just need something reliable that wont break me.

Parts and labor I spent about $900 on mine and didn't think the difference in performancewas worth the money.

Ya im not looking to improve performance as much as save my tranny. I'll just have to go to the transmission shop, im sure they've come across this sort of thing before.
