Tailshaft bearing noise

I' ve got a 97 GT with a nasty noise coming out of the tranny in 4th and 5th gear. Mechanic suggests that its the tailshaft bearing. Is this tough to change?

yea they have to rip the tranny out and then break down the tranny to get to it. what does it sound like?

its a loud whining sound. almost like a gear whine but from the tranny.
