Default RE: abs disconnect

take any electronic aid i can get, huh? i've been in the subaru crowd for the past few years and am at a school affiliated with a pretty well known rally team (Slowboy racing). Not one rally car they build has ABS, TC or stability control. When Colin McRae test drove the 05 STI he had to disconect the ABS because sliding control is very limited when hanging the rear end out. And since ABS is directly related to Traction control it gets disabled as well.

It snowed here where i live last week and I did a test in a large parking lot down at a boat launch to see how much better ABS was compared to being disabled. I stopped 13 feet shorter from 40mph modulating the brake pressure and not letting the wheels lock up more than aprox. 20% with ABS disabled. When i just locked up the brakes i slid 11 feet farther than i did with ABS.

It is written in my Brakes theory book for my class that ABS was "designed for the average driver" and that the computer can only average out 20% of wheel lock up. ABS is like a light switch, the brakes are either on, or off. It is physicly impossible for a computer using wheel speed sensors to keep the wheels at a constant 20% slip. And a chart in my book reveils that on dry blacktop pavement 100% wheel lockup is a more efficient stop than with ABS. Its really only good for wet surfaces or light snow. In deep snow no ABS is better because when you lock up, a piling effect occurs in front of your tires to slow you down. And as far as ice goes...your pretty much F*UCKED either way!

I didn't say that you couldn't stop faster with lock up. I did say that you will be more in control with out lock up. I would rather be in control then save 1-2 feet (dry pavement), 3-5 Feet (Wet Pavement, or 13 feet (Snow).
If you are driving your street car like a race car then you better be on a track. Your body will respond differently when you look up from changing your radio and see a stopped car vs. testing in a parking lot or trying to make turn 10 at your favorite track.

well if you give enough distance between you and the person infront, and pay attention you wont have the problem will you...And maybe you should learn where the buttons are on your radio so you dont have to look.

I hate ABS because it gives so many people a false sense of security.

I hate ABS. If you want to learn how to stop withoutABS go to a parking lot and test the limits. Once you learn the limit of the car you will not need ABS. The problem is that most people stomp on the brakes causing the wheels to lock up. The smoother you are with the brake the more braking poweryou willhave.
Thanks, I did not know it was that easy to unhook the ABS. I will be doing it soon.

I would just unplug it from under the hood. The ABS module is right behind the radiator on the right side of the car (left from looking at it from the front).
