3.8 to 4.6 swap

3.8 to 4.6 swap
i am new to the forum and recently graduated from THE ohio state university. when in school i had a 1989 25th anniversary gt that ran high tens low elevens depending on the day. needless to say as many kids do i ran low on money and foolishly sold it. now that i am done with school i want another mustang. i have settled on the 99-04 body style. i am planning on completely overhauling the suspension and drivetrain so i figured that rather than tearing apart a perfectly good gt, i should just save the money and buy a 6 cylinder. i know with the fox bodies this swap is a big undertaking.i was just wondering what besides the drivetrain and suspension would have to be swapped? (cooling system, electronics, brakes, etc.......?)i know there are alot of threads on here of people thinking it is simple swap from 6 to 8 cylinders, and i don't want to sound like this. if you feel that i would be further ahead just buying a gt to start with, please enlighten me. i am just afraid that most of the stock parts will be laying in my garage anyway, and i might as well not junk out gt parts. thanks for any input. ps. here is a pic of my old fox

RE: 3.8 to 4.6 swap
thanks for the advice guys. i was just wondering that since i was planning on replacing mostly everything that would normally be a deterrence to doing this; that i should just save the money and buy 3.8 with high miles and a good body to save money. i just want to figure out what would be the best avenue before i buy anything.

buy a 4.6 GT with high miles... get an MMR block and do a motor build.. then when youre done.. drop it in and part out the old motor to fund new suspension parts.. then sell those suspension parts to fund something else... etc.
the 3.8 - 4.6 swap is a royal PITA and isnt worth it if you want to do a serious overhaul. besides, all those gt parts you take off.. you can sell to either another GT guy or a V6 guy. us V8 guys usually dont look for V6 parts.

literally about the only thing that u will be keeping on a v6 is the seats. damn near everything else has to go (bellhousing on the tranny, radiator, front suspension, k member, rear end, guage cluster, etc etc etc). oh and almost forgot the rear bumper, no cutouts on a v6
start with a GT and save the headache

It's not hard. I would how ever suggest going either straight for the 4v or plan on a blown 2v.
Motor, trans, Kmember, full wiring harnesses(upper and lower), A/C....
I wouldn't do it, Just start with the V8 if you don't already have it.

so are you guys trying to tell me something? lol after you guys' advice i am now planning on just going with the gt. like i said before i am new to these newer model cars and i appreciate your advice. just a few more questions though. one of the things that you said would need changed is the gauges, why is that(just curious)? also, i am planning on a twin turbo setup, is there any reason why you suggested blowing the 2v instead of the 4?

like everyone said, start with a v8 powerplant in the car, save yourself time AND money. the only "swap" worth wile for any mustang is a 2v-4v swap OR a 4banger fox to 5.hoooo swap.
