Help! DTC code fix question
Hey! I have a 1996 Cobra with a check engine light and two codes, PO171 and PO174. They both say - system adaptive fuel too lean - one for bank one and the other for bank two. We have tried changing the O2 sensors using aftermarket Walker ones -- still codes. Do I need to use FORD ones or is it a MAP sensor problem or fuel pump problem?????? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Ed
I personally would keep the FORD ones in it.. But sounds like youre having problems with youre IMRC's. Very common with ealier Cobras. Carbon builds up on them and they stick, causing rich and lean codes. I'll do research ( im a ford tech ) and i'll come back with a deff. answer.
THANKS! I appreciate the help. The FORD O2 ones that we replaced were crusted over and had to be replaced anyway. But now we have the same codes. Although we have only driven the car a short distance (about a mile or so) then it had a check engine lite so we stopped and checked the codes and got the same ones. Do we need to drive it further to re-program the computer? (the battery was disconnected for about 15 minutes during the O2 sensor replacement). We replaced the rear two O2 sensors about four months ago. When the rear ones coded back then we also had a 6-8 misfire code (PO306,308) which has not recoded this time. thanks for all your effort. ET
Hey man,
Yeah, taking the positive off for a good 10 minutes will do the trick. they came back on for another reason other than the 02's i can gaurentee that. Also the Misfire is most likely the coil packs, my dad has a 97 Cobra. So i know all the problem areas. He put new wires and plugs in because he thought they were bad. The skip went away for a lil bit. But it came back, so i bought him some MSD coil packs and never went bad again. He replaced his drivers side 02 because he thought it was bad. So i removed his IMRC's and cleaned them up and the lean code never came back. lol.

Well thats what we thought also. My buddys Saleen was throwing two codes for CYL #1 MISFIRE and we replaced the plug and the coil-on-plug and come to find out today that it was a cracked cylinder. [&:] Crazy, huh?
