so basicaly if someone says "will a 315 fit a 9 inch wheel" we ALL know and have seen the bulge if you get em to fit, so everyones immediate answer is NO. But if someone wants a 275 on an 8 inch wheel(which comes stock with a 245 or 255) everyone is all "hell yeah". i love the contradiction when talking about almost the same exact change in size, just on a different specific rim/tire......
To be honest, I would not go more than 1 size over what came stock on that size rim. I have 17X9's with 275/45/17's and they fit perfectly, my BFG DR's actualy had a nice little bulge like a normal tire, and my Falekn 452's look just perfect with a little less of that bulge.... to say you are putting that size tire on a rim 1" smaller tells me bad fitment, bad handling, bad look, dangerous. But I guess since I'm the only one pointing this out, I CANT be right, right?

edit: Just cause you can fit a bigger tire on your rim doesn't mean you should, and it doesn't mean its gonna do any good.

I ve got 245 on 17x9 rims and it looks ok and i got 275 on 17x10.5 on the back but i think im about to put some 315 35 17 on the back when the 275s wear out.

My nitto 275/40/R17s fit perfectly on my stock rims. I was getting great contact patch and as good/better launches than with the 245s. I cannot say it was a night and day difference but it was there.
I see no reason to NOT run a 275 on the stock tires, the prices are nearly identical and it looks better. It is either going to help or do nothing, it will not decrease performance.

+1 , I've had 275x4zr17 's on stock98 Cobra wheels, it was just fine. I wouldn't stear you in the wrong direction, and I'm not the only guy out here doin' this. YEAH, THEY'LL FIT!!

RE: Will 275/40/17 fit
If you mount a 275 on a rim that is 7-8" you squeeze the bead of the tire inward which alters the footprint of the tire. This will acutallyreduce the area of the contact patch. Check out the attached picture. This is an exaggerated view of what happens to a tire when you squeeze the sidewalls in.
