my diff clutchs are shot right now and are making a rubbing/ grinding/squeaking noise and have been for a year!!!! it started as a squeaking noise and turnedinto the rest. so dont tell me that it cant make noise!!!!! ihave a new diff waiting to be installed because of this noise that cant happen!!!!
OK, then what in there can squeek? The rubbing/grinding as well as popping can come from the diff, but I've blown a couple and never had a squeek untill I bent the axle.

Guys, the diff is bathed in oil, I doubt it would be squeeking Get the car on a lift or jackstands and idle it in 1st gear. Look for wheel wobble. That's how I found my bent axle.[8D]
I can give that a try this weekend.

You should see one wheel wobble more that the other if one is bent. I was lucky ....both of mine were

it first started as a squeek only in reverse. the first month it happened 3 or 4 times a week buy the second month it turned in to a rubbing noise after 6 months or so it then progressed in to a rubbing noise in reverse and a grinding noise when turning and not on the gas. now its a full time rubbing/grinding noise when ever turning or in reverse. when i took it to ford when it was a squeek they said "we get this alot from gtmustangs this body style, its prob the diff clutches starting to go out" sure enough (for once) they were right.

It's the differential clutches and it's starting to get worse already. How difficult are these to change? Do I have to take it in?

pretty, and more than likely yes.

there should be alot of resistance when trying this with a good diff.
Not entirely true!Fords specs (WHILE I DISAGREE) are a measely 20 FLBS of force is what it should take to rotate the wheel with a fully functioning traction lok.Now in my opinion thats the equivalant to not having it.Theres a tool they make to test this it actually bols on to the hub as a wheel would and allows you to accurately measure this.

If you do have it rebuilt request they put an extra friction disc on each side this really tightens the unit up and doesnt allow for alot of slipping not to mention it will last longer.

I disagree theres not much to them.Hes not performing a gear change so theres nothing to it but to not get the side caps mismatched on the wrong sides theyre machined to fit a certain side. You will need a few specialty tools like a torque wrench a good one and i suggest using 1/2 drive on everything but the differential cover.

The clutches are very simple to swap its the ring and pinion that are more involved and time consuming.
