Default 98GT Battery/ ALT ISSUE

This is on my Friends 98 GT.

When he comes to a Stop, or when he is in Park the Battery Meter Drops down Half Way From Normal. At night when it does this the Lights Dimm (headlights and Cabin Lights). He just replaced the Battery yesterday. He has replaced his ALT. 2 times in the past Year and Half (Battery kept Checking good, but we replaced anyway).

Any ideas what else to check? He doesnt have any system/Neons or anything to Draw energy. What else is there to Check?

His Mods:

Steeda Pulleys
CAI
Superchips Tuner

Thanks in Advance for your help.

Ryan

I would hook up a multimeter and check what output you are getting, the pulleys may cause this, but I doubt it.

check for parasitic battery drain with a ammeter (voltmeter that reads amperage). disconnect the negative battery cable and let it sit for a few minutes with one probe on the cable itself and the other on the negative post.

if you have >20 milliamps you have some form of parasitic drain. i would then check to make sure that nothing is being shorted and go from there.

for specific diagnosis, i would pull fuses one at a time, and see if the reading is lower. once you see the drain drop after pulling the fuse, you have figured out your circuit. then its time to hit the wiring diagrams! i had that issue on my camaro a few months back and that is exactly what i did and it worked. in my case a worn wire that plugged into the dizzy was frayed and grounding, but obviously you are going to have something different.

have fun!
