Default Down shifting

When downshifting from fourth to third lately the shifter goes into fifth gear. Is this caused by the shifter or the tranny. I have short shifter Fidanza witch isn't the best.

That sounds odd beacuse it usually takes a little extra effort to get it over into 5th gear, maybe one or some of the springs in your shifter are busted. Try giving it a split second longer after you slip it out of 4th to center itself then push it straight up into 3rd. Or just get a MGW.

maybe try going straight up with the shifter instead of up-right-up, (sarcasm)

When you put the shifter in neutral it should be a straight forward and back shot to 3rd and 4th respectively. If it pulls to either the left or right without you doing anything or binds when you push it left or right there may be springs or a tensioner that needs to be adjusted to get it into the proper nuetral position.
