4.30 gears
#11
You should go with whichever gear you want, but if you have an auto then 4.10's are the best all around choice.
I'm just saying I don't understand those certain types of people who just get the most extreme things for one reason only (acceleration in this case) and not factor in the other things. It's kinda like people who give suggestions on tint "oh get 5% 5%!!!!!!!!!!" why don't they just layer 2 5%'s that would be so bomb wouldn't it lol

I think that modular engines are ok with slightly higher revs but I heard that the recommended RPM range for freeway cruising should not be over 3000k. I don't know about 98's but if it is anything like new edge autos (which it probably is) then your RPM"s on the freeway will be even higher than a 5spd even with overdrive. Just go with 4.10's

well think about it... same price for 3.73s and 4.10s... why go w. the slower ones? the only thing i dont ilke about 3.73s(and wont like about the 4.10s) is that w. the 3650 i top out way to early, but hey, its after the 1/4 mile so who cares.
same can be said with my exhaust, suspension, etc
hey some ppl like the most extreme ****... others are ****** lol jk jk.. no others just dontl ike it as much... its all a personal taste.

LOL at this thread. You are going to benefit with anything 3.73 and up. I know when I went from 2.73's in my 91 5.0 GT to 3.73's...I bout chit my pants...lol.
It was funny though, I remember one time being at a stoplight with a friend riding shot gun with me...and I just a had the stang a few days feeling all bad ***, back in my young'n days...lol. Well, there was another 5.0 next to me and my friend wanted me to rev the **** out of the motor to get that guys attention. So I put it in neutral and did that...pretty confident that I was going to pull some lenghs on this guy...it was a 5-speed...not supercharged or anything...just probably some basic bolt-ons. But anyway back to the story as soon as the light turned green I really found out how much of a turd the car was with those 2.73's. He made me look like I was going in reverse...as opposed to standing still...lol. The car will feel like it has a power adder on there with really short gears...lol.
For autos...4.30's are a great performance gear...minus economy unless you are driving in the city then your foot will dictate how much you pay out of your wallet for gas. They will run on the highway at freeway speeds and burn more gas...it's not rocket science. The higher your cruise speed the more fuel required to maintain set rpm's. 4.10's are a cross between performance and economy...not much of a difference between 4.30's but will get you a slightly better mpg while performance is sacrificed just a little when compared to 4.30's. Now 3.73's is not going to take you where the 4.30's will performance wise but will save you the gas money when doing lots of interstate cruising.
Now this is just for autos...manuals are a whole new ball game because of the different ratios that exist between that transmission and the auto, hence that is why you DON'T see alot of manual guys sticking there neck out there for 4.30's. Some guys will run them and say it is too much gear and then you have others who wouldn't have it any other way...just really depends on your driving style...really any gear ratio is doable if you just learn how to cope with how the car reacts versus how it previously reacted? I know some people might not agree with my interpretation, but all of this is just my honest opinion because I have owned previous mustangs with auto transmissions with all 3 of those combos over the years...and looking back...4.30's by far has been the best for me, anyway!! I'm pretty much stock now but that will change down the road and a gear change going to something taller might be inorder with the torque friendly KB blower or I might just run my 4.30's, 3700 rpm stall converter, along with my KB and pretty much pwn anything from 0-100 on the street...if I get the hook up...lol. Short(er) gears on a N/A car are a must if you want the best leverage that they can create...which is something you can feel!!

Go with at least the 4.10's or you will regret it. I put 3.73's in my old 96 GT Auto and regretted it. A friend with a 98 GT Auto did 4.10's and it really made me wish I had as well. With my 03 GT 5-speed, I went with the 4.30's and couldn't be happier. It's staying N/A, so I need all the gear I can get. Cruise on the highway at around 60mph now (to keep revs around 2k) and still get around 21 mpg on the highway.
