Want to put a 2001 4.6 in a 96 GT. Thoughts?

Default Want to put a 2001 4.6 in a 96 GT. Thoughts?

First Post, been reading a lot of them though. You guys are a wealth of knowledge on the 4.6 which is still new to me.
I have a 96 GT convert with a bad (cracked block) 4.6 . My engine builder that has built powerfull non mod motors for me also does stock rebuilds, long blocks or short. I'm going to buy a long block from him for $2000 delivered. The question is he has many years available, all at the same price, so I can buy a 96 or my thought is to bump up to a 2001.
If I use my valve covers, coils, wires, oil pan, I THINK I'll just have to buy a intake for the 01 and then bolt it all up using my harness and computer.
This sound right or have I overlooked something?

You'll need the PI intake or an upgraded intake that fits PI heads if you choose to go that route. Is he building you a stock longblock? If so, forge the bottom end as you will want more power as the rods and pistons are brittle in these shortblocks. They are only good to about 400 rwhp give or take a few with a good tune. Good luck on the build.

Thanks for the reply. The PI intake I think is the key. I'll price out the forged bottom end, certainly not getting that at the two grand price

Go with at least a 03 motor so you have the extra threads for the spark plugs. Anything after 99 is going to be a great improvement to the NPI motor

Actually check out MMR. They have forged short blocks for 2K. Your parts from you car will work for the rest of the parts that is needed. Oil pan, etc will just bolt directly up.

Im pretty sure you wont be using the same coils or plug wires.......didnt the 96-98 use a coil pack and not the COP as it is on the new edge
