Default question about timing chains

please tell me if im rite or wrong, when you are setting up the timing chains, you do one side at a time, and make sure the marked links line up with marks on the timing gear. i have already set it up as per the modulardepot post, but it says that the links at the crank gears should line up, mine dont, mine is a 98 could this be why? i do have the links that are marked lined up with the mark on each crank gear, and the motor turns over by hand with no contact
