If it were the U-joints as you suggested, it would surely do it at all times whether going in a straight line, hitting any bumps, or any other normal driving procedures.

Wrong answer. mine were bad and i only heard the clunk when i was going slow and let the clutch all of the way out. once i got up to highspeeds i didnt hear anything my car felt fine.

I had the same problem then my transmission mount was broke. whenever i was going backwards it you would hear a clunking sound. I would go ahead and lower the transmission real fast and check. The mount was easy to replace. If you have a t-45 then you are going to have to get the mount from the ford dealership but if you have an automatic you should be able to get the mount from about any auto parts store. They arent expensive at all
