used heads?
Would you guys ever even consider buying used heads and cams? I am thinking it is probably a bad idea, but I wondering what you all thought. I am thinking a used supercharger makes more sense and will be more bang for my buck.
After looking around for a while I have found several types of superchargers for around $2k and a local set of patriot stg 2 heads w/ comp cams for $1k.

Buying a used head is just as dangerous as buying anything else used. sometimes it's junk, sometimes its not.
Some people sell their perfectly fine heads and cams when they upgrade to better heads and cams; doesn't mean anything is wrong with them.
Sometimes tho, people sell used heads and cams after a serious accident to try and salvage some money, then you might have some problems.
And as far as Patriot Performance Heads are concerned, ive heard that they have fixed all of their problems recently, and if they sell you a head that has a problem, they'll fix it for free, the only thing they wont cover is labor (obviously).

For what it's worth. I bought a used passenger head *well, a used head that was previously equipped as a passenger head* and sent it to a machine shop, had the surfaces machined, the valves looked over and a valve job performed.
Swapped my stock cam back on, reinstalled and havent had an issue.
I would imagine that if you were buying a used performance head, that it's been as taken care of as is possible with a cylinder head.
