Default Camshaft sprocket bolt

Is there a way to torque the bolt down without the special camshaft holding tool? I'm working on a 1998 4.6L NPI

Are they the stock cams? Some aftermarket cams have a 6 point in cast into the middle to hold with.

If that's not there, a rag and a set of vice grips should work. Might need a buddy to hold the vice grips. Just make sure you put it on an area that's not machined and doesn't really do anything.

Yes they are stock cams. What about using an impact I dont like the idea of putting vice grips on my cam dont want to scratch to surface.

You can use an impact, but the cam bolts are actually something I like to use a torque wrench on (and I barely torque anything to spec). If you put a rag over the cam on the un-machined surface and use the vice grips, it won't be a problem.

What's the difference? The cam bolt iirc is supposed to be torqued to 85 or 95 foot pounds. You could set up a 3/8 breaker bar in the back of the cam and have someone hold it while torquing.
