Default Clunk

Getting a knock in 1st and reverse that just started up today. The sound seems to be coming from right behind the stereo deck.

I am guessing there is obviously a problem with the tranny but I am hoping someone else here went through this before and had a problem cheaper than I think it will be.

is it consistent with rpms? (if you give it gas does it speed up in frequency) or is it only when you are in gear?

Do you have an auto or stick?
When do you get this noise? When you first put it into gear? If manual, is it when you let off or push in on the clutch? Is it consistent?
Have you checked your fluid level and quality? When was the last time you had your tranny serviced?
