Default Transmission Fluid

My friend has a V6 Auto 2002 Mustang. She has 70k miles and never did a transmission fluid change. I read somewhere it seems you need to change it every 30k miles or after 60k? I forgot. The question is: should she go ahead and have it replaced with the filter at the dealership or just leave it? I know in some cars if the change is overdue its better not to change at all... Should she use a dealership or a local mechanic? Should she use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF? Please share your info on this... I know many of you have those cars... ( I have always had manual cars and my current is '06 GT )...

I have always heard if the transmission has never been serviced in the first 125,000 miles or so to not even mess with it, but im sure someone else here has some better info than what I have to give.

You need to have it changed. Theres no logical reason in the world to just not get it changed once it passes a magical mileage point. Would you say screw it over getting an oil change because you didnt get it in the first 10,000 miles on your brand new car? Transmission fluid wears down just like engine oil does. With the major difference being that overheating your tranny fluid just once has major repercussions on its ability to do its job(loss of viscosity). Have it changed along with the filter and have the magnet cleaned they will know what you're talking about. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ELSE BUT MERCON V IN THAT TRANSMISSION. MERCON V NOTHING ELSE.

^+1, change it...

In 50+ years of driving I have never heard that assertion, it is one of the sillier things I've heard lately...
