Problems with steering rack after lowering
Anyone had problems with their steering rack after lowering their car ? I blew out my stock rack shortly after I lowered my 2004 gt . So I replaced the rack with a dura-last rack and almost immediatly the driver side boot started leaking and is now soaked. I have vogtland springs 1.6" drop with no isolators top or bottom so maybe a 1.8" drop. Not sure if I'm just unlucky or what but, looking underneath the car while it's on the ground the rack is ALOT lower than the rack ends. I'm thinking it's putting alot off stress on the inner tie rods. Would the rack offset bushings that are sold solve the problem ?

A bump steer would correct the angle of the inner tie rob, but thats nor ur problem. Originally ithink it was timing, with the autzone rack it eother blew or the inners werent installed properly. When it comes to steering components such as racks, tire rods, idler arms, etc ec i have found that Moog seems to be the only over the counter auto store brand that holds up well.

I wanted to get a better rack when I seen the original rack leaking , but on my way to work one morning the rack blew out and I had no brakes or power steering . So my hand was forced to find something readily available. I'm hoping it was just a fluke. This rack has a lifetime warranty. Hopefully that doesn't mean I'm going to be replacing it every 6 months. I appreciate your help.

I have seen lowered cars where a good bump or going over what we used to call a "whoop-dee-do" at high speed will cause the tie-rod to exceed the possible range of motion of the ball and socket joint to the rack--and in the process damage the rack seal.
A bump steer kit will correct this, though to be honest I do not like the exposed swivel joint used by Steeda and others. You may want to install offset rack bushings, they may be able to raise the rack enough to prevent damage to the rack's seals.
When you get that low drop spindles are a better way to go...

I think I'm gonna replace it again with the dura last one and if it leaks again then i'm gonna invest in the offset rack bushings and see if that helps. I'm trying to move on with my mods , but something always has to ruin it. lol
