My 96 ran a little on the hot side after the swap as well.
Was the cooling upgrade done on your car by Ford in the past?

Did you use the pi manifold or your original manifold? Your original npi manifold wouldn't cause clearance issues with the coolent tube.

Just another bit of useless Info that you will never need to know again.......
Yes , its a "Foreign material preventer Thingy".....BUT......

Engine blocks are made of Molten Metal, poured into a "Packed sand mold". When they cool, you have an engine block, with all the passages for oil , coolant, and Cylinders...FULL OF SAND..... Your "Freeze Plugs" or Core Plugs", are nothing more than a hole to let the sand out. since coolant passes thru those passages, they needed to "Cover Them". If you think about it, The holes in the water jackets serve absolutely NO PURPOSE, other than a place to put a metal plug that will Rot and leak Coolant , Right? The hole in the back of the valley is the same situation. The only difference being...Nothing critical flows thru that hole, so they used a plastic Dust cap instead of a steel plug, or a threaded "PIPE PLUG". If you are that worried about it, Duct tape and a 100 dollar bill cover the hole quite nicely.....

No when I purchased the vehicle it had the original intake on it, I I replaced it with an upgraded one, then replaced that one with the PI manifold when I did the swap.
