6-bolt or 8-bolt flywheel
Hi folks, new to the forum.
I bought a real nice 2004 GT w/90k miles. Does it have a 6-bolt or an 8-bolt flywheel? The 8th digit in the VIN is an "X" which I've read is a Windsor motor with an 8-bolt flywheel but I read so much about 6-bolts in the GT's. I'd like to purchase the right flywheel if I decide to go that route.
Btw how heavy is the stock flywheel compared to say a billet steel? In your opinion is it worth the bucks to move up to a replacement flywheel vs having the stock iron resurfaced during a clutch replacement?
Thanks...Pat

I've been wondering the same about mine because I was going to order a stroker kit. But because the shop that will be working on my car does all that, I'm going to let them worry about that. But as far as whether or not you'll need a replacement, it really depends on how much HP you're looking to make when and if you are going FI. If you're staying under 400 or slightly over 400 then stay with your stock. If you're looking to go way past 400, then yeah change it out along with the rods/pistons.

An '04 should have a 6 bolt. I think, and I could be wrong on this but it was only the '99-2000 that had the 8 bolt windsor motors. You are never going to break that flywheel though unless it is defective. The whole purpose of the aluminum ones is to reduce rotating weight.
