Default RE: Cam shopping...

in the september 2004 issue "muscle mustangs...." they did the cam dynoing on a DSS forged rotating assembly with 9.0:1 compression. With CNC ported 2 valve heads by Total Engine Airflow and a bullitt intake. So bassiclly it has better flowing heads nad intake. But less compression and a heavier rotating assembly I would guess. The cam that I purchased was tested on this engine and made, a peak gain of 50hp and 45lb-ft. Which came to 386hp @ 5800rpm and 383lb-ft @ 4800rpm. This was on an engine dyno not rwhp. So if they experienced 50hp I am hoping mabye 20-25hp. I would be happy. I remember reading an article in one of my magaizines which a cam swap on a GT yeilded 25rwhp. I just want to improve the power from 4500rpm up... which it does. With not much loss down low. After I get all this done, including gears and underdrive pullies I will dyno it next week and see my numbers, and you all can see what an almost full bolton mustang can do.

I kinda wish I could go to a drag strip around me, but the closed one is Englishtown, NJ which is 3 hours away. I am not that curious about it, plus its snowing too much here. I have a g-tech pro, I know some people think its crap but its good enough for me, I can try to make some runs with that for ****s and giggles. But the roads are covered with cand so they wont be close to its potential. And thanks for the luck, man!![sm=smiley20.gif]

Have you thought about just waiting... and getting new HEADS and CAMS... together
and doing it all in one shot?

(what I will be doing later on)

I am leaving for the air force in 9 days, so I want to get this all done with before. I will be gone for about 6 months. Then I will come back and drive my car to my base. I just am so excited and anxious to do it. Its going to sound so hot. Later when I am available like after the 6 months I will buy either a bike, a mach 1 motor or work on the 2 valve motor.

Let me know how that cam install goes. After I put my long tubes on thats one of my next mods along with some 4.10s or 3.90s.

Im not going to spend 2 grand. I have only spent close to $1000 right now, with all the parts and overnight shipping charges. I am doing the install myself. So that will save the $1000 bucks. I eventually may buy some patriot performance stage 3 heads, they dont require a core charge. Its $1500 for new heads. I dont have to take mine off and wait like 3 weeks for them to be done. Thats pretty cheap because I have seen just the porting go for like $1300 and more.
Don't be fooled into thinking that all heads are the same, or even close to the same. Patriot heads are budget heads, and they will give you budget numbers, period. If that's what you are looking for then by all means get them, but don't be dissapointed when you dyno 10-20rwhp less than a set of, let's say, AFR's.

Basically you should do some research before just jumping the gun and saying, dang these are 1500 bones so I'll be picking these up for sure. Not saying anything's wrong with patriot, they had issues back in the day with ls1/lq9/ls6 heads but they have resolved most, if not all, the issues. Like you said they are priced nicely and they will deliver some numbers. I most likely will be using these heads on my new build when it comes down to it.

Go with VT stage 1's, I read an article in MMandFF saying stage 2's, are a bit too steep for street use
