How do you double clutch?
<FONT size=2>
It's suppose to prevent excessive synchronizer wear. But I think it's pointless.The clutch is depressed and the shifter is moved to neutral. The clutch is then released, and the gas is depressed to bring the engine speed up to where it needs to be for the lower gear. The clutch is then depressed again and the shift lever moved into the lower gear. When the clutch is released the second time, the engine is already turning the proper speed. </P></FONT>

correct me if im stupid, but wouldnt that explanation make refering to it in the fast and the furious kinda silly?<IMG src=smileys/smiley5.gif border="0"> doesnt sound like something you'd do while racing......</P>
2F2F was a crap movie. Double clutching is pointless IMO. If you got it down to a science, and was using it from 1-2nd and then from 2-3rd it still wouldn't help your ET. Just wear your damn clutch out. These f***ing ricers see something on 2 Slow 2 Stupid and they think it's awesome.</P><edited><editID>karma279</editID><editDate>38014.9602083333</editDate></edited>

lol 2 slow 2 stupid to what? know any better?</P>
its so funny, half these ricers have never even SAT in a GT mustang, let alone a moded one or a cobra.</P>
theymight mean throwing it in neutral, revving and then shifting but just made up a term for it</P>
but thats like powershifting except dumb</P><edited><editID>Jugador</editID><editDate>38014.9875115741</editDate></edited>

I don't remember seeing it in the 2nd movie...i never saw the original 2fag2fag movie so I dunno. double clutching is for cars without synchros...which were invented like in the 60s...so don't do it, the synchros are there for a reason.</P>
In the origional stupid movie, after O'conner lost the race, Diesel was making fun of him and in one of the sentences he said something like: Granny (something) not double clutching like you should?. Think he was just being sarcastic. Obviously double clutching would slow you down. Semis need to be double clutched on both the up and downshift.</P>
Now here's something I don't understand. When downshifting, instead of shifting into neutral and bringing up the rpm to match the roadspeed, why can't you just tap the throttle while holding down the clutch? And when the RPM is up just pop it into the next lower gear, skipping the neutral stuff all together? (BTW, I don't own a manual yet so I don't exactly know if revving in N is the same as revving with the clutch disengaged)

Actually, I worked with a guy who drove trucks for years. The only time he'd use his clutch would be coming to a stop and starting out in first...once he got going, he just floated through the gears without ever depressing the clutch.</P>
To answer your question, you could very well do thatif you know where your engine is synchronized with the gearing. However, it won't work on all transmissions. Honda B series transmissions have a lock-gate which, when working properly unlike mine, won't let you pull out of gear without depressing the clutch.</P>
Neutral means the transmission is not engagedto the drive wheels OR the engine. However, when you push the clutch in a throw out bearing actually pulls the clutch off of the flywheel, disconnecting your transmission and engine from each other, the difference between this and neutral is when you're still in gear, you're still connected to the drive wheels.</P>
Here how the power is routed through your engine and drivetrain:</P>
Engine (at thecrankshaft)-> flywheel -> clutch -> input shaft -> gearing -> output shaft -> driveshaft (AWD/RWD)/halfshafts(AWD/FWD)-> drive wheels</P>
