Default Grinding noise

Just lately my car makes a strange grinding noise which comes from the left front when I back up, steer to the left and hit the brakes. It sounds like I do have totally worn brake pads but I checked and everything is in perfect order. Does anybody have an idea?

I'd try to jack up your front end and shake it down and pry on all your joints/bushings with a pry bar. If they are good you should see almost no movement, if they are bad you will know right away, they'll be pretty loose. You will want to use a pretty big pry bar.

To properly check the front lower ball joints you'll want to rest the control arms on the jack stands and then pry on the ball joint. You will see immediately if it's loose.

However, sometimes a ball joint can be loose but still make noise because it's dried out internally.

By the way you are running all the mods I want for my 1997! particularly the vortech blower.. ::sigh:: college is expensive

Welcome to the wonderful Grinding Noise. I have had mine for over a year on my 2002 GT. I have tried everything but replace struts and ball joints. The struts/ball joints are said to be good by three separate Ford Mechanics and a local mech who has his own shop and specializes in Mustangs.
I have tried all four brakes, all four rotors, all four calipers, both front hubs, alignment, rotate/balance tires 3 times. I was told it was bad tires, but tires are 1 year old. Let me guess, you have at least 35k miles on your car. It seems there is a growing pattern. I have seen atleast one or two others with the same problem the past month or so. If you find a fix for it, let me/us know. By the way, mine is only when braking, but is a bad hum from 15 - 35 mph, until road noise overcomes it. Worse when it rains/wet roads.

Mine does it just in reverse when a hit the brakes and steer to the left. But I'll check the ball joints. I also let you guys know what I found out.

I did lower my car since (springs, shocks/struts) and I also changed to a offset bushings, cc plates and bumpsteer. Since then the grinding noise is gone. I do not know which of the replaced parts made the noise but it seems all alright again.
