Default Street tires better than DR's?

I was talking to this guy and we were talking about racing on the drag strip. He said he ran a 13 flat with near empty 75 shot and bald street tires. I was like why would you use bald street tires, you could easily be in the 12's and he said it was better on your drivetrain, i can see how but what are you opinions?

I run a 100 shot (numbers and mods in sig) with drag radials, and i'm on stock everything...clutch, trans, rear end, etc. I've been to track several times with no issues.

Your driveshaft will be fine on a shot of juice and drag radials.

13.3 n/a, and 12.5 N2O. On my n/a run i got a 1.9 60ft, and a crappy 2.0 60ft. on the juice. I wasn't used to the Nitto's at that point, and screwed up the launch a little. With a descent launch i'm sure i could pull a 12.2 to 12.3.

Bald street tires can be a bad idea for a couple reasons, one being that when bald they are worn out and need to be replaced where are DR has a flat surface and still has thousands of miles left on them. And I really wouldn't want one of them to go on me as I was approaching the top end hit 100+mph

that guy sounds like a moron...theres no way any street tire will hook better than a set of MT drag radials

^ The guy said "... it was better on your drivetrain" and this is correct. However, one would certainly not see a better time on bald street tires, all else being equal.

Who drag races with the intention of being "easy" on the drivetrain? That guy is either a vag or an idiot.

Drive it like you f*ckin stole it.

lol....+1

Ive heard that slicks can be easier on the drivetrain than a drag radial becuase the sidewall absorbs some of the energy and shock

Thats somewhat true...but thats mostly what guys with IRS cobras use as a rule of thumb because slicks just hook and you wont have any wheel hop which is the IRS's worst nightmare. So you might have heard it from one of them. But on a straight axle car, i wouldnt use that principle cus 28 spline axles suck...the stock ones do anyways. But yea, the guy the OP is talking about is a dumba$$. Drag raidals will shock the drivetrain more because...they actually hook!!! unlike bald street tires which dont do anything but spin. So i wouldnt do that. People shave drag radials to get more contact patch but thats usually only in racing specific applications.
