Some of my friends with auto cars do stuff like that or put their car in "N" and pull the e-brake at intersections when waiting instead of putting it in park or holding the brake, I guess they feel cool when they do it lol. Personally when driving an automatic car i just press the brake when i need to stop and leave it in "D." Why get rid of the only advantage you have with an auto by making yourself do work?

Just leave it in drive, no reason to put it in N in an auto.

I'm not condoning it, but it could save gas mileage when going down a hill or something. Your RPMs would drop from 2/3k to idle.

but doesn't it already essentially put it in neutral anyway? i just don't see the point in putting an auto into neutral. even if he does save a little bit of gas, it hardly would be noticeable.

dude he has an auto. it already basically puts it in neutral when you slow down so the brakes already do most, if not all of the work to slow you down. its not like a manual where you can downshift and ride it out to save the brakes.

no-one buys a mustang, let alone a V8 for is gas milage...
I honestly dont think he would see that big of a increase in MPG anyway.

I have never seen an auto put the car in nuetral by itself. It has overdrive if that is what you are referring to, but with gears the rpms still ride high in overdrive.

I dont care about gas mileage, I have an escort. Just saying.

i guess i was referring to overdrive. i don't know a whole lot about autos.

either way if hes not on the accelerator hes not consuming a whole lot of gas. even if he is in higher rpms he is not supplying the motor with an amount of gas that will affect fuel mileage. i don't lose gas mileage if i decide to downshift and engine brake on one tank and put it in neutral and coast on another.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the faster your engine spins, the more gas is being used. That is the purpose of overdrive, if I don't turn overdrive on and cruise around in 3rd, I do believe I would get less MPG than if I turned overdrive on, regardless of my foot pressure. Could be wrong though.
