Default Observation: Smoke On Start Up.

Something I've never noticed before until this morning.

The last few months, upon starting up the car I can hear a whirring from up in the engine bay area...*sounds like a really fast exhaust leak* that only lasts for 4-5 seconds and then disappears.

Today I started the car and noticed a quick puff of white smoke out the side of the car *the right, since the wind was blowing that direction* I thought it was steam at first, then I realized it was 85 degrees out and not 15.

I will admit that I have had an oil leak for quite some time, but I do a pretty good job of checking the oil level and make sure it stays at AT LEAST the low mark.

Any thoughts? Again, I havent put much thought or research into this at all...just looking for potential thoughts. Maybe my car is on its way out at 93K miles?

If its white smoke I would guess anitfreeze.

White=water
black=rich
blue=oil

I gotta agree man, it's prob antifreeze. I had this happen a couple weeks ago checked my coolant reserve, noticed it was a little low, had a pressure check done and they found a leak. I would look into that, because it could be your manifold that cracked - and if so, is a DIY project for sure. be sure to get new gaskets and a new alternator bracket from the start, haha (ones that fit an 03 or something that came with the manifold with the aluminum crossover that would replace yours). It might not be that, but worth checking because I had the smoke issue too.

I did the manifold replacement about two years ago.

I will look though and see if my coolants low or perhaps leaking from somewhere I can observe.

Id check to make sure its actually white smoke and not a blue smoke which would more than likley indicate a bad valve seal by you're description. I have a valve seal kick out on my 2v at 115k.

if your getting a slight tick on start up with a puff of smoke it def sounds like the valve seals
