Some stuff works and some stuff doesn't work so well. You will not see any gain in performance if you are not tuned fr the higher level of octane anyways, and the gain will be fairly minor if at all since 93 octane will get you all the timing you need on a stock 4.6.

Here are a couple articles that have a ton of good info on octane ratings, boosters, and what all the terminology actually means. The first article also shows tests results of many of the popular octane boosters available today. After reading these two articles you will know more than you ever wanted to know about octane ratings and boosters

Exactly. Getting power out of running higher octane is almost all about running more timing. Some people say they run it to be safe and avoid any detonation, which shouldn't happen anyway unless your running on the edge of the limits of your fuel. Most of us are probably on a nice safe tune. You're throwing money away without tuning for the jump.

Using Acetone is more effective as an octane boost than anything the big 3 autoparts sells.
