Default Theft recovery 03, key wont remove, shifter handle broken

Was it really a good deal? It seems to run fine but I cant get the key to turn to the last position so it can be removed. Secondly the shifter **** seems to have been cut off, it will start in all gears so it doesnt seem to recognize it is in park. Is the shifter causing the key problem or is the key causing the shifter problem. Where do I start. Thanks

You are pushing the key lock button forward when trying to remove the key right?

Thanks, I will look again but I did not find any button to release the key. The car does not recognize it is in park, I believe thats why the key will not remove? Is there a sensor on the shifter that needs to be replaced?

The slush boxes do not have the release lever, the shifter has to be in Park to remove the key.

There is a cable that runs from the shifter to the steering column/ignition switch that performs the key removal lever's function, and a Shift Lock Actuator that is energised when the ignition is in RUN, and deactivated when the brake pedal is depressed. If that actuator were stuck, or not being deactivated for some reason the lever will not move to Park, and the cable will not allow removal of the key.

Here is the wiring diagram:

Note the fuses, #s 17, 33 and 35 in the CJB, if any were blown the interlock would not release when the brake is pressed...

Cliff, Thanks for your help, it seems this is the problem. The shifter **** was broken hence the cable is not there. I am sure that is why the key will not come out of the cylinder. What does it take or where do I start to fix/remore and replace the shifter? Thanks again.

Would you be open to a phone call?

I don't know how much I could help on the phone as I've never even worked on an automatic Mustang, in fact I've only owned two in 50+ years of driving, a '69 Charger Daytona and a '90 Cressida--don't like 'em...

Here are some RnR procedures from the '03 shop manual:

Shift Selector RnR;

Brake Shift Interlock Actuator RnR;

Steering Column RnR;

That last document is all I could find about the interlock cable, usually this means it will be obvious once you open things up...

Thanks for your help. I believe I got myself into more than I can handle. hmmm what to do. This was supposed to be an inexpensive car for my son for christmas. I think I have made bigger mistakes but I am not sure. Thanks again. Kevin
