Search this forum for Spyder7724 drive shaft. I use a Ford ranger 4x4 long bed shaft with a cobra flange to make it work. had to have the ranger shaft shortened 9" but it is very stout, bolts in, and cheap. Drive shaft is ford # M4602R and Cobra flange is M4851B. Got all info from Spyder and it is SWEET. My total cost including shop work is around $425. Hope this helps

What kind of weight difference is there between the ranger shafts and one of the all aluminum ones?

Honestly I'd rather just throw on one of the aluminum ones and pay the extra 200 or so instead of doing all that legwork and then having to worry about whether or not the ranger shaft was balanced properly.

don't have one for sale but the shaft is available through Bryant Motorsports on ebay. roland was keeping these in stock for anyone doing a conversion. the cut and balance is simple stuff for any decent driveline shop. so far only one person that i've heard of had any problems and that was at 120mph he got a little vibration. mine is perfect at all speeds and i did mine when the car was basically stock all i had was a tune from lidio @ alternative auto. it was worth .20 seconds 1/4 mile in my auto GT. it weighs about 30lbs. less than stock which for driveline components is a huge weight loss. ghost had all the info in his reply. it's really easy to do and just as reliable as any of the other aftermarket shafts. they use the same balance machines as the driveline shops do. just do yourself a favor and start with a new shaft. some of the rangers had problems with the shafts and the M4602R is the replacement for the recalled units. you don't want to get a junkyard piece since you will never know if was the upgraded shaft or not. any questions about the install just PM me.

Any idea what kind of gains can be expected?

If the mass of the drive shaft is halved it will only take 1/4 of the original energy to turn it in a similar fashion! The rotational energy is proportional to the square of the moment of inertia which itself is proportional to the mass.

It makes a lot of sense to lighten that critter up a tad!

I've been thinking of this myself, especially since that @#%$#%#@#@& thing of mine still vibrates. I reckon I am going to have to disconnect it at the multi-bolt flange and turn it one bolthole at a time and test it until it balances!
