weird drone/buzz from 06 GT vert auto around 40mph
Hey guys.
Our 06 Mustang GT Convertable Auto now has around 5k miles. Since new it has had this "drone" or "buzz" around 1100-1300RPM in overdrive at low speeds (around 40mph).
Its bad, something that i can replicated no problem and if i keep the car in that speed range this is constant. Dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong with it during its first oil change, and I have not had time to take the shop manager for a drive yet.
I am not sure, it could be exhaust drone, could be an out of balance condition with the powertrain but i doubt it. Its very throttle/lug/low rpm specific.
I am just curious if anyone has problems with drone on stock mustangs w/auto?
If it is exhaust drone, would aftermarket catback stake care of it?
Ford told me I can do ford motorsport catback w/o voiding warranty. Any review on the Ford Motorsport catback, and weather its pretty good performance wise compared to some of the mainstream aftermarket stuff?
Thanks guys.

Sounds like exhaust as well to me but you can get ANY OTHER CATBACK mufflers and they WILL NOT void the factorywarranty. Sounds like the stealership was trying to solicit some new business from a current customer. I never trust dealerships and they have proven over and over again that I shouldn't. This is just another reason..... it is proven that catback mufflers don't really give a performance gain (unless you have a CAI and tune) they just change the sound of the exhaust. Hope this helps J

Ditto on the exhaust drone. These exhausts are also prone to a low RPM "rattle" due to partially tight (i say partially tight because you really don't find them loose) exhaust clamps. My GT had an annoying rattle at about 900-1100 RPM until I tightend the clamps.

Rick,
I have the same rattle. It happends mostly on cold start, between 1000-1200RPM as the cold idle rpms come down. At that time if i rev the motor and keep it around 1100-1200 the rattle stays. Dealership "could not" replicate it. It happends mostly when cold.
I am thinking magnaflow catback, do you guys think it would help? I hear this is the quietest of the catbacks.
Thanks.

Thanks Rick I will try that!
FRPP (for racing) axle backs?
I want a little more sound, but not too much.
Don't get me wrong I am no stranger to performance exhaust.
Ex.
my 95 lt1 trans am, m6, has hooker longtubes, offroad Y and 3" hooker catback. Its not quiet, lol.
my 88 383 trans am has hooker longtubes and dual 3" pipes with bullits...
1980 chevy 3/4 ton has headman headers and dual 3" with flowmaster 80s
05 cummins 1 ton has CAT delete and dynomax bullit for muffler..so ya, exhaust sound is my thing
but the ford here is wifes....she does not want too loud.
