buyfordracing.com - $150.00 for 4.10 Ring Gear & Pinion Set; Ratech MBK = $89 from mustangsunlimited.com; & Oil (Autozone) & FM (Ford Dealership) = $25. You do the math.

Gears 190:
http://www.brenspeed.com/m4209f410.html
add the master install kit for 69
add 3 liters Royal Purp
http://www.brenspeed.com/1301.html
15 each

190+69+45 = 304 for parts and thats a full install with new bearings and all. No shipping or tax either!

$900~ is a VERY expensive gear install. I just got a quote from Lone Star Performance last week:

A gear install for your car will run $477.00 before tax. That includes: gears, fluids, pinion seal, ect. If the vehicle requires bearings (it can happen-it doesn't matter if the car has 100,000 miles or 100 miles on it) the bearings are $90.00 + $50.00 labor to replace. The install could be done in a few hours, so you could wait for the car. You would just need to drop off 1st thing in the morning. Just let us know when you want to bring the car in.

sounds about right, but I know the bearing from ford was like $43 dollars. 90 is the cost of a whole kit with bearings included. Also $50 extra in labor sounds a little bogus, cause good or bad the bearing has to be taken off the one and put on the other. But at less then 500 for a install including gears and other shop supplies, they have to make there markup somewhere.

The price seems fair I thought. The shop needs to make money to stay in business. That $925 quote is insane...

true an install shouldnt take more then 3 hours
should it cost 900 bucks all told... no more like 600-500 but if thats what it takes to get a no whine guarentee in your area i would be llooking into another shop father out. that being said you cant really drive for too long after an install at once wothout properly "breaking in " the gears.
If it were me and an extra 300 bucks gave peace of mind then maybe but still 900 bucks is a bit steap

The fact that your brining it to a professional and paying to have it done is in itself the guarantee.

Thats like bringing your car to a tire shop to get new tires, and getting a "your new tires will have air in them" guarantee. I would have no hesitation legally going after a shop for a bad gear install, if they were unwilling to admit and fix the issue. If they cant do it right, they should not offer the service.

I'd consider $900 just to get it right the first time. At least one of you guys who paid a lot less than that ended up having to bring it back in for a re-do.

I would never spend anywhere near $1k for a gear install. I bought my FRPP 4.10s for $179 and had them installed for $275. There was a little whine during the break in period at low RPMs, but after 5 heat cycles (shop recommended) it went away. Currently the only whine I experience is from my Saleen.
